This magnificent 98 ft in diameter tree has been the inspiration for quite a few historical events. It is the site where the first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation was read to the newly freed slaves. Also, the place former slaves began their education. In most recent history, it became the source of a nationally inspired celebration to commemorate the 140th year anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, January 1, 2003. In 2004, the oak tree was named America’s national tree.
